Francis Lawrence, director of Netflix's BioShock movie, explained that adapting the game is tricky because the player is the lead character of the story. He said the project has been on his radar since 2009, when Gore Verbinski approached him after Universal rejected a $200 million, R-rated version. Guillermo del Toro later fell through after not seeing eye to eye with the game's creator, and Lawrence said the adaptation is now getting close.
