Final Fantasy 14 director Yoshi-P said Evercold will put serious consideration into story tempo, moving new lands and cultures into side quests so players can enjoy them at their own pace. He acknowledged that Dawntrail's careful depiction of new areas slowed story progression and clashed with players' desire to keep moving forward, calling it a shortcoming on his part as director. PC Gamer's writer argues Dawntrail's issue was not too much worldbuilding but that the worldbuilding never meaningfully connected to its characters.
