Resident Evil: Night of the Outbreak has grossed over 200 million yuan in its first week-plus in mainland China, with a 7.2 Douban opening score and 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film recreates the experience of a first-time Resident Evil player through details like searching rooms, wasting ammo and missing healing items, and director Zach Cregger said he wanted a Resident Evil film built on scarce resources and slowly closing fear. It keeps only a few game elements as easter eggs, including Raccoon City, Umbrella Corporation and a typewriter.
