Eurogamer praised the ruleset variety and open-world potential, Game Informer highlighted the single-player Island Crown mode, IGN was surprised by how much there is for hardcore players, and Polygon called it the most comprehensive entry in the series. Gamespot was more hesitant, questioning how much mileage the activities will have collectively.
