Nivalis Nights is a story-heavy shop simulation with light relationship building, where conversations affect four attitudes toward the player—friendly, combative, romantic, and savvy—but dialogue options are not clearly marked. Lead writer Thomas Welsh said the opaque romance system was an intentional choice rather than a tested alternative. Some characters' romantic paths are obvious, for comedic effect.
