Epic plans to bring Fortnite to Linux after improving Easy Anti-Cheat

Epic says it intends to bring Fortnite to Linux, but first it is rebuilding Easy Anti-Cheat, and will launch the game via the Epic Games Launcher once EAC Linux v2 works with a critical mass of distro maintainers. Epic says the Steam Deck does not currently support the new EAC Linux v2 solution and that it is talking with Valve, while game security engineering director Rick Deist said Epic is investigating compatibility with Steam Deck and SteamOS devices. Epic has also released a new Epic Games Store client that includes a Linux version for the first time.

Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition draws player backlash over AI upscaling and Steam delisting

Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition, released on October 13, has drawn 82 percent negative reviews on Steam in the last 24 hours, with players citing poor performance, old and new bugs, broken mod support, graphical issues, and alleged undisclosed AI upscaling of unit cards. Sega also delisted all previous versions from Steam and raised the price, while the install size grew from 3.85GB to 45GB. Kotaku compared original and new images, found lost detail, and has asked Creative Assembly about AI use without a reply yet.

Epic launches a new Epic Games Store launcher preview, claiming it starts 46% faster than Steam

Epic Games Store's rebuilt client is available as a preview download for Windows, macOS, and for the first time Linux. Epic says it halved launcher startup time and reaches the store page 46% faster than Steam, with the technical improvements verified by an external vendor; PC Gamer has not tested it yet. The redesign includes a new library view that can import shortcuts to games installed via Steam and other clients, and Epic describes the client as vibe coded, with store GM Martin Keely confirming AI was used to write new code on a completely new architecture.

Epic Games Launcher preview arrives with library loading 30x faster

Epic released a preview version of a rebuilt Epic Games Launcher, built with AI and vibe coding and still light on features. Epic says it cold-boots in 5.47 seconds, 46% faster than Steam, reopens from the system tray in 0.36 seconds, loads the library 30 times faster than the previous launcher, and takes up 300MB. The new version supports Windows, MacOS and, for the first time, Linux, with Fortnite coming to Linux once Easy Anti-Cheat is rebuilt for the platform.

With Steam Frame as Valve's new favourite VR child, Index headset stock is being sold off

Valve has officially discontinued the Valve Index VR kit and launched a 20%-off sale on its headset and controllers to clear remaining stock. The newer Steam Frame launched last month, and its memory-shortage-induced price hike hasn't stopped orders, with the waiting list now stretching into 2027. Launched in 2019, the Index's true legacy lies in introducing individual finger tracking.

References to another in-development headset with OLED panels, referred to as Plano, have appeared in the Steam Frame kernel source code. The panels are listed at 3552×3840 resolution and 90Hz refresh rate, the same panels used in the Samsung Galaxy XR, though output resolution may be lower due to physical limitations of the Steam Frame's chip.

Garry's Mod creator Garry Newman apologizes for s&box, says it goes free-to-play by year's end

Garry Newman, creator of Garry's Mod, apologized in an official blog post for the performance of Facepunch's s&box, saying he is ashamed and embarrassed by its reviews and that selling it as an engine and development experience was the core mistake. Since its April release, s&box has sat at 47 percent positive reviews on Steam with roughly 500 daily players, while Garry's Mod still draws nearly 30,000 concurrent players a day. He plans to bring the sandbox mode to parity with Garry's Mod and beyond with more NPCs, vehicles and first-class multiplayer, drop Facepunch's own backend for Steam Workshop, and move the game from $10 to free-to-play before the end of the year, with existing buyers receiving exclusive Steam inventory items.

Steam client update adds a bouncing logo screensaver that the author says almost never hits the corner

The Steam client received a major update today, and the previously beta-only screensaver for Big Picture Mode is now available to all users, defaulting to art from recently played games and recent screenshots, with custom screensavers also supported. Valve also offers a retro-inspired bouncing logo screensaver in which the Steam logo bounces around a black screen and changes color on each edge hit, which the author believes almost never lands a perfect corner hit. The update also improves startup performance, adds an experimental video codec called Pyrowave to Remote Play, and brings a host of tweaks and fixes for Linux users.

Early Frame recipients had already prototyped homemade add-ons, including a back-mounted power bank holder, HackStrap variants that undercut the £59 Ergonomic Accessories Kit, and a lifesize skull stand that stores the controllers.
