Classic PC Strategy Game Dune 2 Is a 'Holy Grail' Re-Release Stuck in Licensing Nightmare, GOG Says
Classic PC strategy game Dune 2 is a ‘holy grail’ re-release but it’s a licensing nightmare, GOG says
Brief
GOG senior business development and partnerships manager Marcin Paczynski said the 1992 Westwood Studios RTS Dune 2 is one of its most-wanted re-releases, but licensing issues have blocked it. EA owns the game code and assets, yet the IP is split among the Herbert Foundation, Universal Pictures, the successor to Dino De Laurentiis's rights and Legendary Pictures, which gave Funcom an exclusivity deal for games in the IP. Paczynski noted such a release might sell only 50,000 to 100,000 units at $5.99 or $9.99 despite involving multiple multi-billion-dollar companies.
