'We Were Working on a Great Game' — Former Mass Effect 5 Writers Speak Out After EA Shuts Down BioWare
Brief
EA announced on October 21, 2026 that it is closing BioWare and its Edmonton workspace and halting early development on Mass Effect. Writer Catherynne M. Valente said on X that the team had figured it out and was working on a great game, while science fiction author Derek Künsken said he contributed on and off over five years to story, character and lore. Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah said an IP sale seems somewhat more likely now but expressed caution.
Why this
After EA shut down BioWare, writers on Mass Effect 5 publicly described their work on the canceled project, offering another side of its end.
