Analyst says Xbox and PlayStation sales hit new lows as US hardware market faces its most precarious position since the early 80s

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said Xbox and PS5 price hikes have hit sales hard, with US Xbox hardware units down 33% year on year and PlayStation hardware units down 25%, marking an all-time low for Xbox and PlayStation's lowest point since 2013. He said the average US price paid for a new Xbox console in 2026 year-to-date through August was $529, up 26% year on year, while the average PlayStation console sold for $597, up 20%, both all-time US highs. Piscatella said the US hardware market has not been in a more precarious position since the early 80s, and noted that GTA 6's launch next month might ease some of the declines, depending on pricing and product availability.

Blizzard dev says WoW: Forever's scope snowballed: 'Our original pitch internally was: We'll do 4 new dungeons'

World of Warcraft: Forever's content scope grew during development, with associate production director Clay Stone saying the team's original internal pitch was four new dungeons before it became six and then nine. He said the response to Season of Discovery, shipped in November 2023, led to discussions about a non-season version, and that appetite within the team and Blizzard built the launch scope beyond what players expected.

U.S. consumer spending on new physical games is up 5 percent year-over-year so far in 2026, the first growth in more than a decade, according to Circana. The increase is largely driven by a 631-percent jump in spending on game-key cards, offsetting a 3-percent drop in everything else, with Circana's Mat Piscatella citing Switch 2 and publishers leaning more into game-key cards. Overall content spending for August was down 10 percent, and NBA 2K27 was the month's best-selling game.

WoW: Forever Players Love It When Things Look Old

World of Warcraft: Forever beta players have repeatedly pushed back against updated high-definition character models and character portraits, preferring the game's original look. Developer Blizzard originally planned to use only HD models but added an option for original character models after testers stressed its importance, and a quilboar boss mistakenly using its modern WoW model was quickly reverted to its WoW Classic appearance. Earlier this week the character-creation screen also switched back to WoW's original portraits.

Rockstar says losing your wanted level in GTA 6 should feel like a hit-and-run

Rockstar head of development Rob Nelson walked IGN through a 30-minute gameplay demo of GTA 6 ahead of August's Netflix Extended Look, covering the wanted system. Shaking off the law goes beyond escaping a red zone on the map, and Rockstar says it does not want GTA 6 to make players all-powerful the way GTA 5 often did, so actions carry more variables. The demo also showed Jason and Lucia's safehouse, where players can switch characters, interact, or decorate, though Rockstar stressed it is not their own house.

Gears of War: E-Day studio finds a way to get more performance from Xbox Series S - one that other Xbox games could probably use

The Coalition has found a way to work around the Xbox Series S's limited 10GB GDDR6 RAM by offloading data to the console's NVMe SSD, trading about 2GB of storage for roughly 1GB of usable system memory. The tech, co-developed by Xbox's Advanced Technology Group, uses advanced heuristics to keep frequently used data in RAM and move idle data to the SSD. Whether other Xbox games could adopt similar technology remains an open question.

After 12 years, Ultra Street Fighter IV gets two rollback netcode mods, both made using Claude

Ultra Street Fighter IV has received two rollback netcode mods, Faabi's SF4Enhanced and Kabiefox's SF4 Ember, both released in the last few weeks with rollback netcode and private rooms, and both coded with the assistance of Anthropic's Claude. Faabi has since abandoned SF4Enhanced entirely, saying they don't have the time to deliver what the community deserves, and encouraged players to stick with Ember. Both mods appear to be getting a lot of play.
