Riot shuts down League of Legends classic mode about three months after launch

Riot shut down the League of Legends classic mode about three months after it launched in late June this year. The mode, proposed by project lead Phreak, pulled classic champions, items and mechanics from multiple past versions rather than fully recreating a single old patch, and the team rebuilt the underlying content from scratch despite having a complete S3 World Championship build. The article frames the shutdown as a limited-time experiment that met its short-term player-recall goal rather than a failed project.
