Undead Labs goes independent from Microsoft with employee ownership, studio head says he was 'irresponsibly transparent' about layoffs

State of Decay developer Undead Labs has bought itself out from Microsoft through a company called Full Measure and moved to employee ownership, a process studio head Philip Holt says led to a significant number of people leaving. Holt said he was irresponsibly transparent with staff during Xbox's reset, telling them early that job losses were likely so they were prepared on the day of layoffs. He said the studio has made some changes to State of Decay 3 after the layoffs, but the project was not radically rescoped and is still set for release in 2027.

Warhammer Survivors hands-on: more than a Vampire Survivors reskin

After 10 hours with the demo, PC Gamer's Fraser Brown argues that Warhammer Survivors, from Boltgun developer Auroch Digital, feels more like a Vampire Survivors sequel than a spin-off. It keeps weapon evolutions, chest drops, arcana, bosses, and upgrades while adding followers, more overt boss fights, and explosive dice, with Nuln oil turned into a weapon that damages and slows enemies. The game launches on November 10, runs well on Steam Deck, and ramps up faster and harder than its predecessor.

The studio apologized to Brady on X and said it would contact him directly to make things right, while Brady waits to see what compensation is offered. Unlocking the carrier in-game requires $50-100 in gacha spins or roughly 7,000 to 15,000+ ArtCoins.

GameSpot hands-on with the Steam Frame: what a four-figure VR headset gets right

GameSpot senior video producer Kurt Indovina says the Steam Frame is the best VR headset he has used and possibly the last one he will own. He replayed titles such as Half-Life: Alyx on it and describes the standalone wireless headset as a major step up from 2019's Valve Index in inside-out tracking, streaming support and onboard processing, though it sits at the pricier end of the market.

It follows a cease and desist from Bethesda over the AI-generated Fallout: New York fan project, which was also playable in a PC browser and built by Claude Opus 5.5. IGN last week reported the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved running in a browser, and it remains unclear how AI-generated versions of popular games will be policed.
